3 Signs You Need A New Roof

Construction & Contractors Blog

Having a highly functioning roof is very important for all residential dwellings. If your roof isn't in good condition, this can cause a plethora of issues for you. Here are three signs you need a new roof.

Curled Shingles

If you look at your shingles and notice that they are beginning to curl and break, this is a sign that they need to be repaired. Curled shingles are no longer in good enough condition to protect your roof because they have been broken down and warped by the elements over time. Also, because the shingle is curled, it is not protecting the entire surface area of your roof that it is meant to. This means that the wooden structure of your room may become damaged and you may even experience leaking. Since leaking can cause severe damage to several areas of your roof and home in general, it is best to get these shingles replaced before they become a more serious issue.

Granules In Your Gutters

If you look inside your gutters and see that there are large granules in there that have come off of your shingles, this is definitely a sign that your shingles are no longer in the proper condition to protect your roof. Your shingles are breaking down more and more each time that it rains, which provides less and less protection. As an added negative side effect of this, the granules can cause your gutters to become clogged, which can then potentially cause flooding around your home, or at the very least pooling of water. In this type of situation, a roofing service should be contacted and they can determine whether or not it is better to have your shingles repaired or entirely replaced.

It Is Old

Roofs are not meant to last forever. However, exactly how long your roof lasts will depend on the material that it is created out of. While asphalt shingles are only meant to last for 15-18 years, concrete tile can last for 35-50 years. The key is to pay close attention to what roofing materials were used for your roof and then calculate how old they are. This is especially important if you purchased an older home because you need to know if the roof was the original, or if it was updated. Once your roof gets close to the date it is designated to last, it is wise to simply have it replaced in order to avoid future problems with it.
